DESCRIPTION:Dutch Design Week is the biggest design event in Northern Europe and the reason Eindhoven\, a former Philips factory town\, now calls itself a design city. For nine days\, factories\, studios\, schools and shops fill up with furniture\, fashion\, tech\, food and plain weird ideas\, much of it made by young designers who have not been discovered yet. \nThe 2026 theme is R.A.W. (Rebel Authentic Worth)\, which promises the unpolished and experimental side of design. The Design Academy Eindhoven graduation show is usually a highlight\, and Piet Hein Eek’s workshop and shop are worth the detour. \n\nWhen: Saturday 17 to Sunday 25 October 2026\nWhere: locations across Eindhoven\, including Ketelhuisplein\, Piet Hein Eek\, Stadhuisplein\, Sectie-C and the Design Academy Eindhoven\nTickets: a DDW wristband gives access to the paid locations; buy it in advance on the official site\nGetting there: direct intercity trains run from Amsterdam Centraal to Eindhoven Centraal in about 1 hour 20 minutes.\n\nGood to know: with a wristband you can use the free Design Rides shuttle between official locations\, daily from 11:00 to 18:00. SUMMARY:Leidens Ontzet 2026
DESCRIPTION:Every 3 October Leiden celebrates the day in 1574 when the Spanish siege was lifted and the starving city was fed with herring and white bread. Four and a half centuries later the locals are still eating both\, plus a big pot of hutspot (the mash of potatoes\, carrots and onions that the retreating Spaniards supposedly left behind). It is part history lesson\, part street party\, and the whole city joins in. \nThe 2026 theme is hearing\, seeing and tasting\, which is a fair summary of the two days. Expect a nostalgic funfair along the canals\, early morning singing\, music in the squares and a very long parade. Most of it is free. \n\nWhen: Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October 2026. The Taptoe parade is on Friday at 20:00 and the Grote Optocht (grand procession) starts on Saturday at 13:00.\nWhere: the historic centre of Leiden\nTickets: the parade\, Taptoe\, funfair and fireworks are free to watch\nGetting there: direct trains run from Haarlem and Amsterdam Centraal to Leiden Centraal\, then walk into the centre.\n\nGood to know: the full programme is on the 3 October Vereeniging website and app. Trains are packed on the Saturday\, so travel early for a good spot on the parade route. \nPlanning your year?
