SUMMARY:Yoshitoshi. Master of the Moon at the Van Gogh Museum
DESCRIPTION:Van Gogh adored Japanese prints\, so the Van Gogh Museum is a fitting home for this focused show on Tsukioka Yoshitoshi\, one of the last great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. On display is his famous series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon\, shown at the museum for the first time. \nEach print captures a story\, a legend or a historical figure under moonlight\, and the detail and colour are remarkable up close. It is a small exhibition\, so it slots neatly into a visit to the permanent Van Gogh collection. \n\nWhen: Thursday 1 October 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027\nWhere: Van Gogh Museum\, Museumplein\, Amsterdam\nTickets: included with a museum ticket\, which must be booked online in advance for a time slot\nGetting there: from Amsterdam Centraal take tram 2 or 12 to the Van Baerlestraat stop\, a short walk across Museumplein.\n\nPlanning your year? SUMMARY:Hals and Rembrandt at the Frans Hals Museum

SUMMARY:GLOW Eindhoven 2026
DESCRIPTION:For one week in November\, the city that gave the world the Philips light bulb turns itself into an open-air light art gallery. GLOW is a walking route of about 5 kilometres past roughly 35 installations: projections on buildings\, glowing sculptures and interactive pieces that react to you walking past. The 2026 theme is Connect. \nIt is free\, it is easy\, and on a cold\, dark November evening it is exactly the lift you need. Kids love it too. \n\nWhen: Saturday 7 to Saturday 14 November 2026\, 18:30 to 23:00 in the city centre (regional locations until 22:00)\nWhere: Eindhoven city centre\, with extra locations in Helmond\, Best\, Oirschot\, Veldhoven and Lieshout\nTickets: free; a paper map costs €2\, and a separate drone show at the Philips Stadion is ticketed\nGetting there: direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal to Eindhoven Centraal take about 1 hour 20 minutes; the route starts a short walk from the station.\n\nGood to know: you can join the route anywhere. Weekends are very busy\, so a weeknight visit is far more relaxed. Dress warmly. \nPlanning your year? See everything on the events calendar.

SUMMARY:Museumnacht Amsterdam 2026
DESCRIPTION:Once a year\, Amsterdam’s museums swap hushed galleries for DJs\, performances\, workshops and bars\, and stay open until two in the morning. Museumnacht (Museum Night) is aimed at a younger crowd and has a proper night out atmosphere\, but you do not need to be 25 to enjoy it. One ticket lets you hop between more than 65 museums\, from the big names to places you have walked past for years without noticing. \nIt sells out almost every year\, so this is one to book rather than decide on the day. \n\nWhen: Saturday 7 November 2026\, 19:00 to 02:00\nWhere: more than 65 museums across Amsterdam\, from the canal ring to Noord\, West and Zuidoost\nTickets: €25\, on sale since 24 September; the wristband also gives you one free return visit to a participating museum until 31 December 2026\nGetting there: trains from Haarlem to Amsterdam Centraal run late\, but check the last train home before you set off.\n\nGood to know: the Museumkaart and I amsterdam City Card are not valid on Museum Night. Pick three or four museums close together rather than crossing the city all night. \nPlanning your year? See everything on the events calendar.

SUMMARY:IDFA 2026
DESCRIPTION:IDFA\, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam\, is the biggest documentary festival in the world. For eleven days in November it fills Amsterdam’s cinemas with hundreds of films\, from hard-hitting investigations to quiet personal stories\, plus talks with the makers after many screenings. \nIt is a great festival for internationals: films come from everywhere\, and screenings are generally in English or with English subtitles. SUMMARY:National Sinterklaas Arrival 2026 in Grave
DESCRIPTION:The national arrival (landelijke intocht) is when Sinterklaas officially steps off his steamboat from Spain and the Dutch December season begins. Each year a different town hosts\, and the whole thing is broadcast live\, with most Dutch children glued to the screen. In 2026 it is the turn of Grave\, a small fortified town on the river Maas in the Land van Cuijk\, the first time Brabant has hosted in 26 years. \nGrave was chosen in true Sinterklaas style: after last year’s arrival he threw a bottle with a letter from the steamboat\, and it washed up there. \n\nWhen: Saturday 14 November 2026\, from 12:00 until about 16:00\, broadcast live from 12:00\nWhere: The steamboat moors at the Loswal on the Maaskade in Grave\, after which Sinterklaas parades through the historic centre to the Markt\nTickets: free to watch; on TV via NPO Zapp on NPO 3\nGetting there: Grave has no train station\, so check 9292 for buses from Nijmegen or Cuijk closer to the date.\n\nGood to know: expect road closures\, parking bans and big crowds in this small town\, so check the Land van Cuijk municipality site before you travel. For most families the TV broadcast\, with the Sinterklaasjournaal running from Monday 9 November\, is the main event. \nNew to all this? Read Sinterklaas explained for South Africans.

SUMMARY:Sinterklaas Arrival in Amsterdam 2026
DESCRIPTION:A day after the national arrival\, Sinterklaas makes his own entrance in the capital. The Amsterdam intocht is a big family day out: the Sint arrives by boat\, then parades through the city centre on his white horse\, followed by floats\, marching bands and a lot of excited children waving carrots and drawings. 2026 is the 88th edition. \nIf you have small children\, or just want to understand why your Dutch colleagues start talking about pepernoten in November\, this is the easiest way to see the tradition up close. \n\nWhen: Sunday 15 November 2026\, roughly 10:00 to 15:30\nWhere: Amsterdam city centre. The I amsterdam listing gives the usual pattern: by steamboat along the Amstel from the Omval to the Scheepvaartmuseum\, where he gets the key to the city\, then on horseback from the Waterlooplein via Rembrandtplein\, Utrechtsestraat and Weteringschans to a party on the Leidseplein. The official site still has to confirm the 2026 route\nTickets: free\nGetting there: take the train to Amsterdam Centraal and walk or tram to the route; roads in the centre are closed for the parade.\n\nGood to know: arrive early for a spot where little ones can actually see\, and bring snacks and warm layers. Check the official site for the route. \nNew to all this? Read Sinterklaas explained for South Africans.

SUMMARY:Unox New Year's Dive Scheveningen 2027
DESCRIPTION:Nothing clears a New Year’s Eve head like the North Sea in January. The Nieuwjaarsduik (New Year’s Dive) is a proper Dutch tradition: at noon on 1 January\, thousands of people in matching orange Unox beanies charge into water of around 5 degrees\, scream\, and charge straight back out again. Scheveningen hosts the biggest and most famous one. \nFor South Africans used to a braai on the beach at New Year\, it is a rather different way to see in the year\, but it is weirdly joyful and you will have a story for life. \n\nWhen: Friday 1 January 2027. Registration opens at 10:30\, warm-up at about 11:45\, and the dive is at 12:00\nWhere: Scheveningen beach by the Pier (Scheveningen Bad)\, Den Haag\nTickets: €4 per diver\, paid on site by card or cash; no advance booking. Everyone gets an Unox hat\nGetting there: train to Den Haag Centraal\, then tram to Scheveningen. Parking is very limited.\n\nGood to know: bring a towel\, a warm robe and dry clothes that are easy to pull on. Lockers can be rented at the APCOA car park on Nieuwe Parklaan. The dive can be called off in storms. \nPlanning your year? See everything on the events calendar.

SUMMARY:National Tulip Day 2027
DESCRIPTION:In the grey depths of January\, Dutch tulip growers build a pop-up garden of around 200\,000 tulips on Museumplein and invite everyone to pick their own bouquet for free. National Tulip Day (Nationale Tulpendag) marks the start of the cut tulip season\, and it is a cheerful splash of colour right when you need it most. \nIt is short\, popular and very Dutch\, with a brass band playing while you queue and the Rijksmuseum as a backdrop. \n\nWhen: Saturday 16 January 2027\, 13:00 to 17:00\nWhere: Museumplein\, Amsterdam\nTickets: free; each person may pick up to 10 tulips\nGetting there: train to Amsterdam Centraal\, then tram 2 to the Rijksmuseum stop; or train to Amsterdam Zuid and a short tram ride.\n\nGood to know: the average wait is about an hour\, and in previous years the field was picked clean before closing time\, so arrive before 13:00. SUMMARY:Drawing! at the Rijksmuseum
DESCRIPTION:Around 1600 something exciting happened to drawing in the northern Netherlands. Artists such as Hendrick Goltzius\, Jacques de Gheyn II and Abraham Bloemaert worked together and pushed the medium forward\, trying new materials\, techniques and subjects. \nDrawing! brings together more than 100 works from European and American collections to tell that story. Drawings are fragile and rarely shown\, so this is a chance to see pieces that normally stay in the print room. After Amsterdam the show travels to the Morgan Library & Museum in New York. \n\nWhen: Friday 12 February to Sunday 23 May 2027\nWhere: Rijksmuseum\, Museumstraat 1\, Amsterdam\nTickets: check the official site for prices; entry for ages 18 and under is free\nGetting there: from Amsterdam Centraal take tram 2 or 12 to the Rijksmuseum stop.\n\nGood to know: the Rijksmuseum often runs drawing activities alongside\, so bring a pencil. \nPlanning your year? The Mauritshuis\, home to Paulus Potter’s famous life-size painting The Bull\, explores that question in a spring exhibition about the bull across the arts. \nIt promises a journey through history and art\, and it is an easy add-on to seeing Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and the rest of this jewel box of a museum. Full details of the works on show had not been published when we checked\, so keep an eye on the museum website. \n\nWhen: Thursday 4 March to Sunday 27 June 2027\nWhere: Mauritshuis\, Plein 29\, Den Haag\nTickets: check the official site for prices; the Museumkaart is usually valid\nGetting there: direct trains run from Haarlem and Amsterdam to Den Haag Centraal\, then it is about a 10 minute walk.\n\nGood to know: spring visits pair nicely with a walk around the Hofvijver pond and the Binnenhof next door. \nPlanning your year?
