On the first Sunday of August, Deventer hosts what is billed as the biggest book market in Europe. Hundreds of stalls line the IJssel river and spill into the old Hanseatic town centre, selling second-hand novels, comics, rare editions, old maps and prints.
There are plenty of English-language books if you look, and the town itself is one of the prettiest in the east of the country.
- When: Sunday 1 August 2027, 09:30 to 17:30
- Where: Along the IJssel and through Deventer city centre
- Tickets: Free
- Getting there: Direct intercity trains from Amsterdam Centraal take about 75 minutes; the market is a 10-minute walk from Deventer station
Good to know: Go early before the midday crowds, bring cash and a sturdy bag, and wear comfortable shoes: the market is long.
