In the grey depths of January, Dutch tulip growers build a pop-up garden of around 200,000 tulips on Museumplein and invite everyone to pick their own bouquet for free. National Tulip Day (Nationale Tulpendag) marks the start of the cut tulip season, and it is a cheerful splash of colour right when you need it most.
It is short, popular and very Dutch, with a brass band playing while you queue and the Rijksmuseum as a backdrop.
- When: Saturday 16 January 2027, 13:00 to 17:00
- Where: Museumplein, Amsterdam
- Tickets: free; each person may pick up to 10 tulips
- Getting there: train to Amsterdam Centraal, then tram 2 to the Rijksmuseum stop; or train to Amsterdam Zuid and a short tram ride.
Good to know: the average wait is about an hour, and in previous years the field was picked clean before closing time, so arrive before 13:00. Dress warmly.
