Cyclocross is cycling’s muddy winter sport: riders race laps of a short course through sand, mud and steep banks, jumping off to carry their bikes over obstacles. It is huge in the Low Countries, and the Hoogerheide round traditionally closes the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup season.
This is the home race of the Dutch stars, and the crowds line the tape several deep, with beer tents and frites stands everywhere. Once inside, spectating is easy: wander the course and watch the riders come past every few minutes.
