Now for something completely different. Ice speedway is motorbike racing on ice, on bikes with no brakes and tyres studded with long metal spikes, so riders lean over until their shoulders almost touch the track. It is loud, a little mad and genuinely spectacular.
Thialf in Heerenveen hosts a World Championship ice speedway weekend in early April 2027, long after the skaters have hung up their blades. If you like motorsport, or just want a story to tell your mates back home, this is one for the list.

- Getting there: train to Heerenveen station, then a local bus, taxi or a walk of roughly 2 km.
Good to know: it is noisy, so earplugs are a good idea, especially for children.
