Need something to do in that strange gap between Christmas and New Year? The Dutch national allround and sprint championships fill it nicely. Allround means skaters race several distances and the best all-rounder wins, while the sprint title goes to whoever is fastest over the short distances.
Because Dutch skating is so deep, a national championship here is often stronger than international races elsewhere, and places for the European Championships a fortnight later are on the line. It is a relaxed holiday outing with serious racing on the ice.
