Oerol turns the entire island of Terschelling into a stage for ten days in June. Theatre happens in dunes, forests, barns and on beaches; art installations pop up in the landscape; and the villages fill with street performers and music. You cycle from one location to the next, and the island itself, with its huge skies and empty beaches, is half the show.
It is a wonderful way to discover the Wadden islands, which many expats never get round to visiting. The 2027 edition is the 46th.
- When: Friday 11 to Sunday 20 June 2027
- Where: across Terschelling, Friesland
- Tickets: fast-bird wristbands cost €55 (€42 for ages 18 to 35, €16 for children); individual shows are ticketed separately, and street theatre in the villages is free
- Getting there: train to Harlingen Haven, then the Rederij Doeksen ferry across the Wadden Sea to West-Terschelling.
Good to know: accommodation on the island books up months ahead. Bring or hire a bike, as not all locations are reachable by public transport.
