If you want to understand Dutch consumer culture, spend a day at the Huishoudbeurs. This enormous home and lifestyle fair has been running since the post-war years and reaches its 80th edition in 2027, with hundreds of stands selling kitchen gadgets, food, fashion, beauty and home products, plus demonstrations and TV personalities.
It is loud, busy and full of samples, and a surprising number of expats end up leaving with a new vegetable slicer.
