Willem de Kooning was born in Rotterdam, stowed away to America and became one of the giants of Abstract Expressionism. The Rijksmuseum’s retrospective focuses on his drawings, more than 120 works shown alongside selected paintings and sculptures, to reveal how he actually worked.
Two of his most famous paintings, Woman I and Woman and Bicycle, hang in the Gallery of Honour next to the Dutch Golden Age masters for the duration of the show. It is a fascinating clash of centuries, organised with the Art Institute of Chicago.
