Okay, so here’s something that doesn’t get nearly enough love: Friday Night Skate Amsterdam.
If you’ve never heard of it, picture this. Hundreds of people on inline skates, rolling through the streets of Amsterdam at night, together. No cars in the way, a crew guiding everyone safely through the city, and just a big crowd of people having a good time on wheels. It’s honestly one of the coolest things this city has going on, and I want to make sure it sticks around.
What is Friday Night Skate Amsterdam?
Friday Night Skate, or FNS for short, is a free skate tour that happens every Friday night. And get this, it’s been running since 1997. That’s almost 30 years of people skating through Amsterdam every week! This Friday is skate number 813. That’s wild!
The route is a loop of about 20 km through the city, and it’s led by an experienced crew who keep everyone safe in traffic. The route changes, and they post the route of the week on their website before the skate.
When and where?
Meet up: 20:00 at Het Ronde Bankje in the Vondelpark
Roll out: 20:30
Distance: around 20 km
Cost: nothing. It’s free!
No sign up, no membership, no nonsense. You just show up and skate.
Getting there is easy too. The Vondelpark is easiest to reach on your skates or by bike, and it’s also easy to get to with public transport.
Is it on this week?
The skate only goes ahead when the roads, weather and visibility are good enough. So if it’s been pouring with rain, it might be off. They make the call on Friday during the day, and you can check the website, their Instagram or Facebook to see if it’s on. Even better, you can sign up for push notifications on their site so you get a message the moment they decide.
Can I join if I’m not a pro?
You don’t have to be amazing, but you do need to be able to skate and brake on your own on bike paths in a big group. That part is important. Nobody wants to be the person who can’t stop.
If you’re just starting out or not sure about your level, they’ve got you covered. During the summer months they run an Entry Skate on the first Friday of the month. It’s slower, and there’s a free clinic beforehand to help you get your skills up. Check their agenda to see when the next one is.
What should I bring?
- Inline skates (obviously)
- Good braking skills
- A helmet, plus wrist, elbow and knee pads, especially if it’s your first time
- Something bright or with lights so people can see you in the dark
Have a read through their safety guidelines on the website before you go. It’s worth it.
Here’s why I’m writing this: they need help
The good news is that FNS is still really popular and new people keep showing up. The not so good news is that an event like this can’t run without volunteers. No crew, no skate. Simple as that.
They’re especially looking for people who can be a “blocker.” That’s the person who helps keep the group safe from traffic along the route. If you’re a strong skater, pretty fit and have good traffic awareness, you could be exactly what they need. And don’t worry, they’ll train you.
If that sounds like you, chat to the crew before or after a skate, or send them an email at fridaynightskate@hotmail.com.
Even if you’re not up for volunteering, the easiest way to help is to just show up. Bring your mates. Post about it. Tag them on Instagram. The more people who know about it and come along, the better the chance this thing keeps rolling for another 30 years.
Let’s keep it alive
Stuff like this is what makes a city fun. It’s free, it’s social, it gets you moving, and you get to see Amsterdam from a totally different angle on a Friday night. It would be a real shame to lose it.
So dust off those skates, get down to the Vondelpark on Friday, and roll out with everyone at 20:30.
See you there!
