Tips for your first running event in the Netherlands
- Register early. The big races sell out fast, sometimes within hours. Egmond, the Zevenheuvelenloop and the Amsterdam and Rotterdam marathons are notoriously hard to get into, and Rotterdam uses a lottery.
- Use the official resale. Most big events have an official way to buy or sell a bib if someone cannot run. Never buy a bib from a stranger online.
- Plan your transport. Roads close on race day, so go by train or bike. NS often runs extra trains for the big events.
- Dress for Dutch weather. Wind and rain are part of the experience, especially at coastal races like Egmond, Schoorl and the Kustmarathon. An old sweater or a rain poncho at the start is a lifesaver.
- Know your distance. An English mile (EM) is 1.609 km, so 10 EM is 16.1 km and 4 EM is 6.4 km.
- Join a local running club. Almost every town has an atletiekvereniging (athletics club) with training groups for all levels, and it is a great way to meet people if you are new to the Netherlands.
